This ceramic stirrup spout bottle originated in the North Coast, Peru. It is the work of the Moche people who flourished in the area from the 1st to the 8th Century CE. Moche people used irrigation and built large structures like the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon in the Moche River Valley, Peru.
This bottle depicts a monkey with a cap. The name stirrup comes from its resemblance to the stirrup of a riding saddle. The pottery is slip painted and displays a red decoration on a cream background.
The bottle was brought back from Peru by International Oil Driller Charles Wallen in the early 20th Century.
