Head with Spout Blackware Vessel
This blackware vessel with a single spout, arising from the head, is from the Chimu. The human-like figure shows a head with arms in front.
The Chimu belonged to a pre-Columbian civilization that inhabited the northern coastal region of present-day Peru from around 900 CE to 1470 CE.
The Chimu people were known for their skilled architecture, artisans,textiles, road systems, and irrigation techniques such as canals.
The Chimu were a water-focused culture often depicting aquatic life and animals inhabiting the coast. The iconography in their pottery depicts birds, animals, humans, andfigures from their beliefs and cosmology.
Chimu pottery was produced on a large scale by using molds.
The bottle was brought back from Peru by International Oil Driller John Braybook in the early 20th Century.
