Teresa Altiman
Teresa Altiman is a local artist who draws inspiration from the landscape and her cultural heritage.
Teresa grew up on Walpole Island and has been interested in art since childhood. Her art is inspired by her Indigenous heritage and her spirituality is connected to her work. Teresa uses subjects that deal with the environment and nature, particularly birds. She works in a variety of mediums, including acrylics, textiles, wall hangings, and craft work.
Some of her work is inspired by the landscape of Walpole Island but she also draws inspiration from other locations. Through her art, Teresa gains a better understanding of who she is and her spirituality, and how to interpret that for her audience.
A woman with a special influence in her life was her mother. Teresa noted in an interview at the end of 2012, “My mother was a strong woman… a positive influence and where some of my creativity stems from.”
