Turkey Chow Mein Casserole
This Historic Recipe, Turkey Chow Mein Casserole by Carol Bateman come to us from “Our Favourite Recipes Cookbook” Errol Village School, Camlachie, Ontario – 1995
More than 100 years ago, children along Lake Huron, near the village of Errol, gathered for classes in a log schoolhouse. The school was called School Section (S.S.) No. 12 and was located on the 10th concession of Plympton Township.
The community of Errol was thriving at the time and school enrolment had reached 132 pupils by 1868. Crowding of the nearby S.S. No 13 prompted the construction of a new school just a kilometre and a half west of Camlachie on Egremont Road. Some pupils from both No. 12 and No. 13 formed the new population at the school. Camlachie residents preferred a village site for the school but farmers, who at that time paid more tax, had the final say in the location.
Errol Public School was established in 1885 on a one acre site and was purchased for $100.00. In 1942 hydro was installed and by 1959 the school had art tables, a washstand and new cupboards.
In 1965, when a new subdivision was built up around Errol, the school was not large enough to house the additional pupils. A new two-room school was built in 1960 to alleviate this problem and busing became necessary for the first time. Formerly known as S.S. No. 20, it was now called Errol Public School. It was built of red brick and is the present east wing of the existing school.
In 1975, the two-room school was no longer adequate, so plans were formulated to build a complete school with room for grades K to 8, a library and gymnasium. Construction began in the winter of 1976 and students were then housed in the new school in 1977.
In the fall of 1985, Errol celebrated its 100th anniversary. An open house was held at the school with many students returning to share fond memories.
In September of 1989, Errol’s boundaries were extended to the west to include part of Sarnia to Perch Creek. By September of 1992, a two room port-a-pack was added to the north end of the primary wing.
In the spring of 1995, after many years of confusion with Errol Road School in the city of Sarnia, it was decided to approach the Lambton County Board of Education with a proposal to enhance the name of Errol Public. A survey was sent to the ratepayers, students and parents of the school at this time. Many possibilities for the name enhancement were considered but, by an overwhelming majority, the final decision was to change the name of Errol Public School to “Errol Village School”.
