This week’s Historic Recipe is Oatmeal Cookies from Mary Isabella (McColl) Tuck.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup soft oleo
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups oatmeal
Oatmeal Cookies
- 1 cup soft oleo
- ¼ cup hot water
- Mix together well
- Add 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon soda (small)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups oatmeal
- Bake in 375 oven
- Watch closely
- Remove from base while hot
Mary Isabella McColl was born June 19, 1892 to Ida (Smith) McColl and Archibald McColl of Petrolia. Archibald was a carpenter and was well-known in the local oil drilling circles. On May 31, 1920, she married William Wilson Tuck, a “popular and progressive business man of Sarnia”. Wint Tuck began a business career as a baker when he was 19 years old, and operated his first store on Mitton Street. He then operated a bakery on the corner of Cameron and Mitton Street for 33 years.
