Photo Gallery: LCA Portraits - Captain John Edger Bury will appear here on the public site.

The Bury family lived and died on the St. Clair River, Lake Huron and the other water ways of the Great Lakes.

John Bury born on February 19, 1819 to William Bury and Margaret Oughton (sic) and he was the Grandson to John Colbrook Bury. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Lampman on January 8, 1846 and his second was to Sarah Ellis. He died on May 1, 1895 and he is buried in Moore Union Cemetery, Mooretown. From his second marriage to Sarah Ellis Bury, one of their children was John Edger Bury.

John Edgar Bury was born in about 1857 at Sombra, Lambton County. He married Elmira Wing on June 6, 1882 at Moore Township. To them the following children were born - Gordon Russell Bury, Maude Ethel and Myra Edith Malin.

John Edgar Bury’s life came to a tragic ending on November 24, 1898. While acting as First Mate he was supervising the loading of freight on to Steamer Avon of the Union Transit line on the Detroit River. John was standing on the gang plank when he fell off the ship hitting his head on the projecting fender strake.

Though he was pulled from the river immediately he had drowned as a result of the head injury he received in the fall.

His body was returned home and his funeral took place at his mother-in-law and father-in-law’s home, Mr. and Mrs. F. Wing’s of Froomfield. John Edgar Bury was buried at Moore Union Cemetery, Mooretown, Lambton County.

His wife Elmira Wing was laid to rest on August 22, 1909.
John and Elmira (Wing) Bury’s house is now the Sombra Museum.
