Incorporation of the Village of Wyoming
It was a busy week at Lambton County Council back in 1873! Yesterday, we marked the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the village of Watford and today we mark the same anniversary for the village of Wyoming!
On June 26th, 1873, Lambton County Council passed by-law no. 315 to officially incorporate the village of Wyoming. At the time, a survey had been completed which showed that the village contained 794 inhabitants.
The Lambton County by-laws provide us with an interesting view into the current events and challenges of the time. The county was responsible for many aspects including infrastructure improvement (by-law no. 368, to grant one hundred and fifty dollars to improve Lake Shore Road in the Township of Sarnia), staff salaries (by-law no. 325, to regulate the salary of the matron of the goal and to provide for the payment thereof), health and education (by-law no. 377, to erect the Town of Petrolia into a High School District), and other common occurrences (by-law no. 620, for licensing regulating and governing Hawkers, Peddlers, and petty Chapmen etc.).
