Hope Millholland
Antoinette Hope Harris Millholland was known as Mrs. Red Cross. Hope received the title Mrs. Red Cross in 1990 after over 50 years of dedicated service with the Sarnia-Lambton branch of the Red Cross Society.
Antoinette Hope Harris was born in South Carolina in 1901 to Wilmet and Estelle Harris. Her father was a postmaster who died at sea in 1913 aboard the SS Mohawk. According to the 1920 US Federal Census, she was living in Washington, D.C. with her mother where she met and married William B Millholland in 1922. In 1928 William and Hope moved to Sarnia.
Her involvement with the Red Cross started in 1940 at the beginning of WWII, after answering the call to make clothing for soldiers overseas. After the war, much of her volunteer work focused on Creations, a small group that makes crafts with proceeds going toward domestic and international relief activities. Hope also volunteered at local blood clinics as a receptionist where she met with donors, answered questions and provided bedding supplies to those locally in need.
Hope passed away in 1999 and is buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Sarnia. During her life in Sarnia she received the Ontario Bicentennial Award and the Canada 125th Anniversary Medal.
