Brownies - Fudge Type
This Historic Recipe, Brownie - Fudge Type by Alice Deyo, comes to us from “Port Lambton United Church Women Recipe Book – 1979”.
Alice Isobel Beggs was the daughter of Thomas Robert and Margaret "Maggie" (Grant) Beggs. Thomas' parents were Robert and Isabel (Harkness) Beggs. Margaret's parents were John and Nellie (Shea) Grant.
Thomas and Maggie had four children together:
Alice Isobel Beggs Deyo – 1921 – 2012
Gretta Ellen Beggs Wadsworth – 1922 – 2008
Bessie Irene Beggs Sturgis – abt 1926 - 2017
Robert John “Jack” Beggs – 1931 – 2023
Alice went on to marry John Edward “Jack” Deyo who was born on August 3, 1921. They had five children:
Barbara A. Deyo Dubuque - 1947 – 2015
Joan Arlene Deyo Almas – 1952 – 2013
Marilyn Alice Deyo Chatterton – 1955 – 2011
Shirley Luanne Deyo Feddes - 1961 – 2010
A son - living
Alice was very active in her community. She 4-H Leader, a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and belonged to the Bond Room Girls that manufactured munitions during the second world war. In her down time she also enjoyed curling.
Alice and Jack lived in Port Lambton, Ontario.
Jack Deyo was a petroleum resources inspector with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources from the 1970s to the 1990s. He worked primarily out of the Chatham and London MNR offices. He lived most of his life in the Wallaceburg, Ontario area.
Jack passed away in 1996 and Alice died on October 29, 2012. They were both laid to rest in Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg, Ontario.

Ingredients
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
½ c. flour
½ c. chopped nuts
Instructions
Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in eggs. Blend in chocolate and stir in flour and nuts. Bake in 8” x 8” pan at 350º for 30 – 35 min. Cool and cut in squares.
6 tbsp. cocoa and 2 tbsp. butter may be used in place of the chocolate. These may be iced if desired.
